Save time by choosing the right site template

That’s it! Congratulations on getting started with your site! The first step is to choose a template – a kind of template that proposes a style, fonts and colors. Created by a web designer, this template saves you time, because the professional has thought of everything for you. There are many templates to choose from, so to make your choice easier, follow the guide.

Not sure which template to choose? I asked myself a lot of questions when I was creating my website. It’s important to take this moment seriously, but don’t make it a major step, as your choice is not irrevocable.

In general, it’s difficult to stand back and make the right choices when it comes to talking about yourself, presenting your work, selling your products or services… Here are 3 principles to follow to avoid making a mistake.

Choose a template based on your field

Templates are designed in advance to adapt to the requirements of each activity or passion. Designed as real sites, they include elements specific to the trades you practice. An electrician will need to be easily contacted, hence the presence of different access points for contact details. On the passion side, a traveler will want to share a large number of photos. To meet this need, travel-themed site templates feature numerous galleries.

The templates guide you through the stories they tell. Coherent texts and visuals make up inspiring proposals for fleshing out your content, building your titles, articulating your paragraphs, selecting your photos… Opting for a site template that respects your chosen field is therefore a good idea. This way, you won’t have to omit any elements, and you won’t have to rebuild the various pages. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you from deleting and/or adding functionalities to adapt your site to your personal objectives.

Choose a template according to style

The various site templates are created by designers whose job it is to ensure graphic consistency and, consequently, the overall beauty of a model. They take well-considered directions according to the subject matter and respect their codes. Each element that makes up a design is carefully selected and perfectly placed to respect the overall harmony.

Typography and colors are the backbone of a site template. Take the time to study them and determine whether they correspond to the field in which you operate, the image you wish to convey and the values you uphold.

A law firm, a bank or an accountant will prefer a formal serif font and sober colors. Cursive typefaces and fresh colors are preferred for passion sites and diaries. Finally, fonts become more whimsical and colors brighter when dealing with diverse and varied artistic universes.

The right choices are made for you to simplify your life, but also to avoid the pitfalls of haphazard formatting. So you can concentrate solely on the content of your future site, whether it’s about your project or your passion.

Choose a template based on the time you have available

Time is the 3rd axis on which you can base your choice of site template. Think carefully about the amount of time you have available or want to devote to your site project.

If you don’t have a lot of time: choose a site template that corresponds to your profession, activity, passion or talent. The themes are numerous and cover a wide range of fields. This way, you can start building your site with a solid foundation and the functionalities you need to achieve your communication goals. All you have to do is modify the content by personalizing the texts and uploading your photos.

If you have a little time: opt for a site template in your field, but allow yourself a few modifications in terms of colors or type of image gallery, for example. Then concentrate on your content. Work on your texts, telling your personal or professional story, presenting your character or your company, giving details of your background, your products or services. You can also tell your story through quality photos. This is the perfect opportunity to have your portrait taken, or to organize a quick team photo session.

If you have the time: start with a style you like best and rebuild your site’s pages one by one as you please. Stack blocks, add and adjust the articulation of your site’s pages as you go. Your home page should be treated with particular care. This is where most visitors will land, and therefore the first thing they’ll see. This is where it all comes down to it! Your home page must make your visitors want to read on… or not!

To save time and stack the odds in your favor, benchmark your competitors or counterparts. This involves looking at how their sites are built and noting the specific features and must-have elements so that they appear on yours.

List the various subjects to be covered on your site; they will determine the number of pages and enable you to anticipate how the information will be structured. Think, for example, of a company presentation, your values, a manifesto, your commitments, customer reviews…, if you’re a professional. If you’re an enthusiast or an artist, explain the origin of your passion, your inspirations, your current events…
